Password

You can change passwords for services provided by the Center for ICT Services, such as shared PCs, email, front server, KITnet wireless LAN, e-Learning (Moodle), VPN connections, and on-campus services that use Shibboleth authentication.

How to set a password

The password can be between 10 and 24 characters.

Recommended way to wear

  • As long as possible
  • Contains a mixture of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols

Ways to avoid

Please do not set the following types of passwords as they are easily guessed.
The University’s  User Portal (Password Change)does not allow you to set the following types of passwords.

    • Something that is the same as the user name, or just the user name reversed
    • A number with a small number of digits (for example, a four-digit number)
    • A word that is in the dictionary
    • A person’s name (last name only, first name only, last name/first name/last name)

Change Password

You can access the password change system from the User Portal (Password Change) in the “Web Services” category of the menu.

    1. Please make sure the URL in the address bar is https://cis.kit.ac.jp/en/portal/
    2. Make sure you have a secure connection (lock iconis displayed).
    3. Please enable Cookies and Javascript.
If an error message such as “Session Time Out” is displayed and you are unable to move to the change screen, it may be that your settings do not accept cookies for the User Portal (change password).Make sure your browser is set up to accept cookies from the password change site.

Don’t use passwords that are easy to guess

Keep your passwords out of sight

Don’t write your passwords on sticky notes and stick them on your monitor or leave them in public places.
Instead, consider using a password manager to store your passwords securely.

Don’t share passwords

Do not disclose or share your password with colleagues or acquaintances.

Don’t reuse passwords

Do not use the same password for your CIS account in other services or apps.

Do not enter passwords randomly

Never enter your CIS account login name or password on a phishing site or on a page linked to a URL contained in a suspicious email.
Even if the sender (From:) has an email address in our university domain (kit.ac.jp or a domain ending in kit.jp), it may lead you to a page that will steal your password.

Before you enter your CIS account login name and password on the page, be sure to check the following:

  • The URL begins with https://
  • The domain name part of the URL is that of our university (~.kit.ac.jp).
  • There is a lock symbol indicating that it is an SSL connection.
  • No server certificate errors have occurred
  • The server certificate was issued by our university

How to Change

You can change your temporary password to a permanent one that is unique and secure.
KIT password policy are below. In order to change your password, you have to go to User’s Portal.

Length Limit

  • 10-24 characters

Available Characters

You MUST mix letters, numbers, and symbols in your password.

  • Uppercase and lowercase English letters (a-z, A-Z)
  • Numbers 0 to 9 (But impossible for the first letter.)
  • Symbols # $ % ( ) + * / = – _ ^ . [ ] { } :
    Space @ & , ; < > \ ” ‘ are NOT allowed.

How to Reissue

If you forget your password, you need to submit an application form.
Write necessary information on the form and bring it to Center for the Information Science.
