[Important Security Breach Prevention Measure] Restrictions on Remote Access Software Use

The KIT e-mail account service has permitted users to access their KIT office e-mail accounts directly from off-campus using email applications. However, due to recent security breaches we are implementing a security measure to prevent unauthorized use of KIT email accounts and have decided to temporarily suspend this permission. Users will still be able to access KIT email accounts remotely using the methods listed below. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and appreciate your understanding and cooperation. Note that this is an emergency security measure and is subject to future changes.

What is being implemented: A block on KIT office email account connection via remote access software
Date of implementation: Effective as of Tuesday, November 28, 2023 (1:00 p.m.)
Impact: As of the above date and time, it will no longer be possible to send or receive KIT account e-mail from remote access e-mail software.

Post-Nov. 28 methods for sending and receiving remote access e-mail to and from a KIT email account:

  • Connect to the campus network using a terminal VPN connection, then access your KIT e-mailaccount using your remote access e-mail software.
  • Use Webmail ( https://webmail.cis.kit.ac.jp ) to send and receive remote access e-mail.
  • Note that email sent from the Eduroam wireless LAN on campus will also be viewed as coming from an off-campus network.
  • If you temporarily set up automatic email forwarding to a private email address, we recommend that you do not forward email over 2KB in size* or forward attachments.
    This measure will help us avoid confidential/personal information leaks.
    Take care to avoid errors when entering a forwarding e-mail address.
    * Note that portions of any email exceeding the 2KB limit will be omitted when the email is forwarded.
